Σκοπός της διοργάνωσης είναι να εμφυσήσει στους μαθητές της Δευτεροβάθμιας Εκπαίδευσης την αγάπη για τις επιστήμες του ουρανού και να προάγει τη γνώση τους σε θέματα Αστρονομίας και Αστροφυσικής. Με τη συμμετοχή τους στο Διεθνή διαγωνισμό οι μαθητές έχουν την ευκαιρία να γνωρίσουν συμμαθητές τους με τα ίδια επιστημονικά ενδιαφέροντα από διάφορα μέρη του κόσμου.
Είναι η πρώτη φορά που η Ελλάδα φιλοξενεί Διεθνή Ολυμπιάδα Αστρονομίας -- Αστροφυσικής, είναι η πρώτη φορά που διοργανώνεται Ολυμπιάδα Αστρονομίας -- Αστροφυσικής σε χώρα της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (εκ των παλαιών κρατών -- μελών) και φυσικά είναι η πρώτη φορά που ένα τόσο σημαντικό επιστημονικό και πολιτιστικό γεγονός θα λάβει χώρα στην Περιφέρεια Θεσσαλίας και ειδικά στην πόλη του Βόλου, την πατρίδα του Κένταυρου Χείρωνα, του δάσκαλου του Ηρακλή και του Αχιλλέα.
Οι εμπλεκόμενοι φορείς (Υπουργείο Παιδείας, διά Βίου Μάθησης & Θρησκευμάτων, η Περιφέρεια Θεσσαλίας, ο Δήμος Βόλου, το Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας, το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης και η Εταιρεία Αστρονομίας & Διαστήματος Βόλου) σας χαιρετούν εγκάρδια και περιμένουμε να σας φιλοξενήσουμε στην ελληνική γη που γέννησε την επιστήμη της Αστρονομίας και με τους πατέρες της (Θαλή, Πυθαγόρα, Δημόκριτο, Εύδοξο, Ηρακλείδη, Αρίσταρχο, Ερατοσθένη, Ίππαρχο, Πτολεμαίο, Υπατία, κ.α.) καλλιέργησε, ανέπτυξε και διέδωσε στα πέρατα του τότε γνωστού κόσμου, την τόσο όμορφη και αποκαλυπτική επιστήμη.

The aim of the IOAA is to introduce high school students to the marvels of the Cosmos and promote their knowledge in the area of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
By participating in such international events, they have the opportunity to meet students with the same interests from all over the world. It is the first time that Greece hosts an International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics, it is the first time that an astronomical-astrophysical Olympiad is organized by one of the old European Union countries and, of course, it is the first time that such an important scientific and cultural event will take place in the Prefecture of Thessaly and especially in Volos, the homeland of Centaurus Chiron, the teacher of Hercules and Achilles. The involved institutions (Ministry of Education, Prefecture of Thessaly, Municipality of Volos, University of Thessaly, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Society of Astronomy and Space in Volos) cordially welcome you.
We are looking forward to offer you our hospitality in Greece, the land that gave birth to the science of Astronomy, while the forefathers of Astronomy (Thales, Pythagoras, Democritus, Eudoxus, Heraclides, Aristarchus, Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, Ptolemy, Hypatia and others) cultivated, advanced and spread the beauty and mysteries of the science of Astronomy up to the far reaches of the then known world.
